On October 31, 1924, Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson played a baseball game in Orange County that became a solid part of the area’s folklore. Sponsored by the Anaheim Elks Club, it was a homecoming for Johnson of sorts, in that he grew up in the neighboring oil town of Olinda. Nearly 5,000 people turned out for the event at the Brea Bowl field to see Ruth’s team win, 12–1. Today, the Brea Bowl site is a residential neighborhood, though the natural “bowl” of the area is still intact. (Photographs courtesy of Chris Epting.)
