The Evans Memorial Chapel

Arcadia

University of Denver founder John Evans built the Evans Memorial Chapel around 1878 at Thirteenth Avenue and Bannock Street near downtown Denver in memory of his daughter Josephine Evans Elbert, who died during childbirth in 1868 at the age of 24. Built at a cost of $13,000 in the Gothic Revival style, the chapel was a part of Grace Methodist Church from 1889 to 1953. It was threatened with demolition in 1959 to make way for a parking lot. It was instead dismantled and moved in pieces to the university campus in 1960 at a cost of $80,000. The Evans family funded the move. It was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and given landmark status in 1988. It is the oldest Protestant church in the city still in use and is a popular venue for weddings.
