Western Portal Tunnel, 1940

Arcadia

The artwork around the tunnel to the Lake Washington Floating Bridge opening was designed by sculptor James Wehn, the same artist who created the Chief Seattle statue at Tillikum Place, as well as the famous Chief Seattle busts. The center reads, “City of Seattle—Portal of the North Pacific.” This photograph was taken in 1940. (Courtesy of Mark Sundquist.)
