Hotel Leona Building, 1920s

Arcadia

The prolific architectural firm of Marcuse and Remmel was responsible not only for the transitional design, but also the construction of the Hotel Leona in Alameda in 1896. Shown here in a 1920s photograph, the hotel’s first owner was Alexander Johnson. Over the years, it was given different names, including “The Leona” and “Leona House” in the 1910s, “Leona Apartments” in the 1920s and 1930s, and, later, the Leona Hotel. The majestic building is still located at 1645 Park Street near the corner of Buena Vista Avenue and houses a restaurant.
