The Welsh Congregational Church is located at 688 Main Street in Edwardsville, the church was renamed the Dr. Edwards Memorial Congregational Church in honor of Reverend Thomas Cynonfardd Edwards (1848–1927), who served the congregation for 49 years. He was born in Glandwr, Swansea, in Wales and immigrated to America in 1870. He became the minister for the Mineral Ridge Independent Chapel in Ohio and later, the First Congregational Church in Wilkes-Barre. In 1878, Reverend Edwards started his ministry in Edwardsville, where he would remain until his death on March 13, 1927. He dedicated the Welsh Congregational Church on August 30, 1889. In 1889, the annual Edwardsville Eisteddfod features, music and poetry, began. The festival was renamed the Edwardsville Cynonfardd Eisteddfod in honor of Reverend Edwards and is the oldest continuous eisteddfod in the world.
