At the northeast corner of Cleveland, Dickens, and Lincoln Avenue stands Carnival Grocery Store, opened in 1937. Sigmund J. Osty took this photo in 1963. Purchased sometime between 1949 and 1952 by George Costas and his father-in-law Harry Andrew Dimopoulos, the original store occupied only the very front section of the building. In 1959, Costas bought out Dimopoulos. Ten years later, Costas bought out the entire space and the store became as it is today. In 1968, Dimopoulous’ grandson, also named Harry, came to work at Carnival Grocery. By 1982, he was the primary owner of Carnival Grocery. Four years after Costas’ death in April 1997 at age 77, Arthur Paris purchased it from the family corporation. Shortly after this photo was taken, reknown dance teacher Berenice Holmes opened her storefront ballet school in the small building to the left. Young Lincoln Park girls danced there for years, even after Miss Holmes’ death in April 1982 at age 77. Today a dry cleaner occupies the building.
