Description for Records:

The Mechanics Monument, on Market St. in San Francisco, was sculpted by Douglas Tilden and unveiled in 1901.

Commissioned by James Donahue, the son of Peter Donahue (an early San Francisco industrialist), the statue commemorates the toil and sweat that lay at the origin of the Donahue empire.

The forceful and dynamic work of art is one of the new items in the area to have withstood the 1906 earthquake, and stands today as it did when it was first placed.
