Royal Mile Market

We love a good Farmer's market in Edinburgh (check the Edinburgh Farmers' Market, Stockbridge Farmers' Market or Tram Stop Market articles). On a sunny day you can struggle to get moved at any of these as people fill up on organic burgers and pick up the latest locally-produced jewelry.

However, contrary to popular belief, it's not always 20 degrees and beautiful sunshine in Scotland, it's been known occasionally to rain, and outdoor markets are not the most appealing when it's wet. That's where the Royal Mile Market has it's advantage - an entirely indoor market!

Smack bang in the city centre, on the corner of the Royal Mile and the Bridges, the market is held in the old Tron Kirk (Kirk is the Scottish word for church). The church has been pretty much empty sinced the congregation moved out in the 1950s. Now it's open 7 days a week and a wide range of local businesses have set up inside.

It can be a little cramped and overwhelming inside. There is such an amazing selection of items it takes a while to see everything. There's stalls selling records, scarves, skin care, cakes, jewelry and a cafe, just to name a few of the things you'll come across. Sadly you won't find wifi though.

Rumour has it that the market may turn back into a festival venue and bar come August so best to get along while you still can.
