The J.C. Napier School was named for the noted African American leader in Nashville. Generations of south Nashville children attended the school, which is located in what was once called Trimble Bottom. Many of the school’s alumni are well into their eighties. The J.C. Napier School, J.C. Napier Homes (the first public housing complex built by the city), and the J.C. Napier Playground are in close proximity to each other. J.C. Napier had considerable influence in Nashville and blood-ties to the white owners of the profitable iron works on Rolling Mill Hill, located not far from Trimble Bottom.
