Sally Rand and Her Music Box, 1936

Arcadia

Fan dancer Sally Rand arrived in San Francisco in 1936 and promptly opened her own nightclub, the Music Box, at 859 O’Farrell Street. With her famous ostrich-feather fans, Rand’s look in this publicity photograph by Romaine Photography Studio epitomizes Art Deco attitude and style. Along with a chorus line of the “world’s most beautiful glamour girls,” the notorious Miss Rand brought her risqué act to “Frisco,” performing three shows nightly. A good businesswoman as well as the star attraction, Sally Rand made the Music Box one of San Francisco’s most popular nightclubs in the 1930s.
