The Marist brothers acquired the Hudson River estate of Edward Bech in 1905 and renamed it St. Ann’s Hermitage, which today is part of Marist College. Bech was a Danish immigrant, later Danish consul, and owner of the Poughkeepsie Iron Company and Fallkill Iron Works. After he purchased Hickory Grove, a farm on the Hudson River, he engaged the Danish architect Detlef Lienau to design a gatehouse, gardener’s cottage, carriage house, and a main house that was never built.
