Rhodes of Seattle Store, 1965

Arcadia

Back when Nordstrom was just a shoe store, Rhodes of Seattle at Second Avenue and Union Street advertised itself as “Seattle’s Home-Owned Department Store.” (The “of Seattle” differentiated it from a separate Rhodes in Tacoma.) Its customer services included a pipe organ to entertain customers. In 1965, it became part of M. Lamont Bean’s Pay ’n Save Corporation. In 1968, Bean closed Rhodes’ downtown store (it was razed in 2005 for the WaMu Center bank tower). (Deran Ludd collection.)
