Springfield Civil War Soldiers, 1863

Arcadia

As the Civil War progressed, the War Department took a more organized approach when it called for 300,000 troops in July of 1862 and then 300,000 more in August. The federal government warned of a draft if state quotas were not met. Springfield had an obligation of 250 men under each call, and the city set about raising money for the bounties to attract new volunteers. Massachusetts met the 1862 quota, but new demand in 1863 finally brought the draft. These Springfield soldiers sat for this photograph around 1863.
