President Grover Cleveland's Birthplace at the Old Manse, 1837

Arcadia

This photograph is of the Old Manse in Caldwell, the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland. Cleveland was born here on March 18, 1837, and was named Stephen Grover Cleveland. His family left Caldwell when he was four years old. It is not known if he ever returned. The Old Manse was also the residence of the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Caldwell. This photograph, a gift of Caldwell photographer Gene Collerd, is the oldest known one of Cleveland’s birthplace. It shows Bloomfield Avenue as a dirt road.
